Tiheävirtsaisuutta, often translated as urinary frequency, is a medical symptom characterized by the frequent urge to urinate. This can occur at any time of day or night, and the volume of urine passed may be normal or reduced. It is distinct from polyuria, which is the production of an abnormally large volume of urine.

Several factors can contribute to tiheävirtsaisuutta. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common cause, as inflammation of the bladder and urethra irritates the bladder lining, leading to a constant sensation of needing to urinate. Bladder irritants in the diet, such as caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods, can also trigger this symptom in susceptible individuals.

Other potential causes include an overactive bladder (OAB), a condition where the bladder muscles contract involuntarily, causing a sudden and strong urge to urinate. In men, an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH) can obstruct urine flow, leading to incomplete bladder emptying and a persistent feeling of fullness, thus increasing frequency. Pregnancy is another common reason for increased urinary frequency due to pressure on the bladder from the growing uterus and hormonal changes.

Certain medical conditions like diabetes, interstitial cystitis, and neurological disorders can also manifest with tiheävirtsaisuutta. Sometimes, the symptom can be related to psychological factors, such as anxiety. Diagnosis typically involves a review of medical history, physical examination, and potentially urine tests or further urological investigations to determine the underlying cause. Treatment strategies are aimed at addressing the specific cause, which may include lifestyle modifications, medication, or surgical interventions.
