Tieyos

Tieyos is a contemporary Japanese band founded in 2005 in Osaka. The group originally began as a garage project by drummer Kenji Matsuda, guitarist Ryo Tanaka, and bassist Satoshi Fujii, before expanding to a full lineup with lead vocalist Aiko Yamamoto and keyboardist Haruo Kuroda. Their musical style blends elements of indie rock, shoegaze, and traditional Japanese instrumentation, creating layered soundscapes that have earned them a niche following in the underground music scene.

The band’s debut single, "Koukan," was released in 2007 on an independent label and reached the top 30 on Japan’s indie charts. In 2009 they released their first full-length album, Echoes of the Kawan, which received favorable reviews for its atmospheric production and lyrical depth. Tieyos is known for incorporating the koto and shamisen into modern arrangements, a practice that has been noted by music scholars as an innovative approach to cross-cultural musical fusion.

Tieyos has toured extensively in Japan and has performed at notable festivals such as the Fuji Rock Festival and the Sapporo Autumn Fest. The band has also collaborated with visual artist Miki Asada on a multimedia project that combined live music with projected animation.

The group’s most recent release, Mirrors in the Sea (2021), continues their signature blend of melancholy guitar riffs and melodic vocal hooks. While they remain relatively low-profile on the international stage, Tieyos maintains a dedicated fan base through live shows, limited edition releases, and online streaming platforms. Their contribution to modern Japanese music is considered significant by contemporary critics, who cite their role in bridging traditional sounds with contemporary alternative rock.
