Tierschutzbund

Tierschutzbund is a common term for animal-protection organizations in German-speaking regions. The most prominent example is the Deutscher Tierschutzbund e.V. in Germany, which serves as a national umbrella for a broad network of regional associations and animal shelters. The designation is also used by similar organizations in other countries and by numerous local clubs that focus on pet welfare and animal protection.

These organizations pursue a range of activities aimed at improving animal welfare and preventing cruelty. They work with companion animals, farm animals, and wildlife through direct care, rescue operations, and adoption programs; provide veterinary support and foster networks; and engage in public education, vaccination campaigns, and stray-animal control efforts. Additionally, they advocate for higher welfare standards and influence policy and industry practices through campaigns and partnerships with authorities and other non-governmental organizations.

Structure and funding typically characterize these groups as non-profit, membership-based associations. They are financed through member dues, donations, fundraising, and, in some cases, public subsidies. Such organizations often rely on volunteers for shelter operations, rescue work, and outreach, and they collaborate with government agencies, veterinary professionals, schools, and other welfare groups to promote responsible animal care and overall animal welfare standards.
