Tiefstwert

Tiefstwert is a term used to describe the smallest value observed or attainable within a given context. In everyday language it corresponds to what is commonly called the minimum. In more technical discussions, the meaning can vary: the Tiefstwert may refer to the actual smallest value attained by a function or data set, or, in cases where such a value is not attained, to the theoretical lower bound known as the infimum.

In mathematics and statistics, the concept is distinguished by whether a lowest value is achieved. If a real-valued function f defined on a domain D has a point x0 in D with f(x0) = min_{x in D} f(x), then f(x0) is the Tiefstwert of f on D. If no such point exists but there is a greatest lower bound m such that f(x) ≥ m for all x in D, and values of f can come arbitrarily close to m, then m is the Infimum or Tiefstwert in the broader sense, though not necessarily a value the function actually attains.

Praktisch begegnet man dem Begriff in verschiedenen Bereichen: In data analysis, der Tiefstwert ist das Minimum einer Stichprobe und dient zusammen mit dem Höchstwert zur Bestimmung der Spannweite. In Natur- und Technikanwendungen kann der Tiefstwert beispielsweise Temperatur- oder Preisuntergrenzen beschreiben und so für Risikoanalyse, Design und Planung von Bedeutung sein.
