Ti64

Ti-64, also known as Ti-6Al-4V, is a widely used alpha-beta titanium alloy designed for high strength and good corrosion resistance. It contains about 6% aluminum, 4% vanadium, with the remainder titanium. Commonly referred to as Grade 5, it is the most prevalent titanium alloy for structural applications, and an extra-low interstitial (ELI) version is used for medical implants.

The alloy combines a high strength-to-weight ratio with good toughness and corrosion resistance. Typical density is about 4.43 g/cm3 and elastic modulus around 110 GPa. In heat-treated conditions, yield strengths generally range from roughly 800 to 1000 MPa and ultimate tensile strengths near 900 to 1000 MPa, with elongation dependent on temper. Ti-64 maintains strength to moderately elevated temperatures (up to about 300–400 °C) but loses ductility at higher temps. It forms a stable oxide layer that provides excellent corrosion resistance in oxidizing, marine, and many other environments. Machining is relatively challenging due to low thermal conductivity and high strength, requiring sharp tools, adequate cooling, and careful process control. Welding is feasible with proper technique and fillers, though hydrogen pickup and residual stresses must be managed; post-weld heat treatment can relieve stresses.

Applications of Ti-64 span aerospace, automotive, and industrial sectors. It is used for airframes, fasteners, landing-gear components, turbine parts, and engine hardware, as well as for medical implants in the ELI variant. Availability includes wrought products such as bars and plates, as well as castings and forged components.
