ThroughHoleBestückung, also known as Through-Hole Technology (THT), is a method of assembling electronic components onto a printed circuit board (PCB). In this process, component leads are inserted through pre-drilled holes in the PCB and then soldered on the opposite side. This technique has been a fundamental part of electronics manufacturing for decades.

The primary advantage of ThroughHoleBestückung lies in its mechanical strength. The leads passing through the board and the solder joint create a robust connection, making it ideal for components that experience significant physical stress or vibration. This includes connectors, large capacitors, and transformers. It also provides good thermal dissipation for certain components.

However, THT assembly is generally a slower and more labor-intensive process compared to its modern counterpart, Surface Mount Technology (SMT). The holes require precise drilling, and the larger component sizes can limit the density of components on a PCB. Automated insertion machines exist, but they are often less versatile than SMT placement machines. Despite the rise of SMT, THT remains relevant for specific applications where its mechanical robustness is paramount or for prototyping and repair.
