Tholosaurids

Tholosaurids were a group of extinct marine reptiles that lived during the Triassic period. They are known from fossil remains primarily found in Europe and North America. These animals belonged to the order Thalattosauria, which were a diverse group of marine reptiles characterized by their long bodies, paddle-like limbs, and often elongated snouts. Tholosaurids themselves were typically medium-sized, reaching lengths of around 3 to 4 meters.

The exact lifestyle and diet of tholosaurids are still debated among paleontologists. However, their flattened tails and limb structure suggest they were adapted for swimming. The shape of their skulls and teeth indicates they likely fed on small marine invertebrates, such as crustaceans and mollusks, which they may have crushed with their jaws. Some researchers have proposed that they were semi-aquatic, spending time both in the water and on land, similar to modern crocodiles or turtles, though evidence for this is limited.

The classification of tholosaurids within Thalattosauria has been subject to revision as new fossil discoveries are made. They are generally considered to be a distinct family within the order. The fossil record for tholosaurids is not extensive, making detailed studies challenging, but they offer valuable insights into the diversification of marine reptile life during the Triassic, a period of significant evolutionary innovation following the Permian-Triassic extinction event.
