Theorette

Theorette is a fictional coastal city-state and the principal urban center of the Theoretic Commonwealth, located in the western Valorian archipelago. Since medieval times it has served as a maritime hub connecting inland markets to sea routes. The name Theorette is believed to derive from an old term for harbor, with the suffix -ette denoting a settlement.

Theorette began as a fishing village in the early second millennium; it grew significantly after the construction of a protected harbor in the 12th century. It achieved de facto independence during regional conflicts in the 15th century and later joined the Theoretic Commonwealth.

The city is governed by the Theoretic Council, an oligarchic body composed of heads of the four guilds: Merchant, Shipwright, Dyehouse, and Sailmaker. A magistrate, elected to five-year terms, chairs meetings and oversees civic administration.

Its economy centers on shipbuilding, glassmaking, dyeing, and fisheries, with the harbor handling regional trade and cargo transshipment. The coastline is rugged, featuring a sheltered inner bay and salt-flats along the southern littoral. The climate is temperate with strong maritime influence.

The population numbers around 70,000 residents, reflecting a mix of inland settlers and island communities. The annual Sea Lantern Festival marks the solstice with lantern-lit processions, boat parades, and a market of crafts. The Theoretic language is widely spoken alongside regional dialects.

Theorette hosts the Navigation and Arts Academy, founded in 1567. Principal landmarks include the Lighthouse of Orin, the Crystal Market, and the Old Docks.

Transportation links include ferries to neighboring islands, coastal rail connections, and road networks that connect Theorette with inland towns.
