Thelytokia

Thelytokia is a form of parthenogenesis, a type of asexual reproduction in which a new individual develops from an unfertilized egg. In thelytoky, this process results in only female offspring. This is in contrast to other forms of parthenogenesis, such as arrhenotoky, where unfertilized eggs develop into males. Thelytoky can occur in various species, including insects, crustaceans, reptiles, and even some fish.

There are several mechanisms by which thelytoky can occur. Automixis involves the fusion of two products of meiosis from the same individual, such as the fusion of a meiotic product with a polar body. This can lead to varying degrees of homozygosity in the offspring. Apomixis, on the other hand, involves the production of offspring genetically identical to the mother, with no meiotic recombination or fusion. In some cases, thelytoky can be facultative, meaning that females can reproduce both sexually and asexually, switching between the two modes depending on environmental conditions. In other cases, it is obligate, with females reproducing solely through thelytoky.

Thelytoky can have significant implications for the genetic diversity and evolutionary potential of a species. While it allows for rapid population growth and colonization of new environments, it can also lead to reduced genetic variation, making populations more susceptible to diseases and environmental changes.
