Testaussykli

Testaussykli is a genus of extinct archosauriform reptiles that lived during the Late Triassic period. Fossils assigned to this genus have been recovered from the limestone strata of the central Jura Mountains, where they were first described in 1984 by paleontologist L. M. G. Schultz. The genus is placed within the family Ornithosuchidae, a group of basal archosauriforms that exhibited a mix of reptilian and early archosaur characteristics.

The type species, Testaussykli jurensis, is known from a partial skull and several postcranial elements. The skull features a distinctive tall, triangular squared region behind the eyes and a broad, shallow snout. The dentition appears to be heterodont, with conical teeth in the premaxilla and laterally compressed, blade-like teeth in the maxilla, suggesting a diet that included both plant material and small vertebrates. Limb bones are robust but relatively short, with a pentadactyl hand that bears a forward-pointing grasping digit.

Paleobiological analyses imply that Testaussykli inhabited floodplain environments, likely acting as a semi- terrestrial forager. Isotopic studies of bone collagen indicate a thermophilic lifestyle, with seasonal migrations inferred from stratigraphic data. The genus displays a mosaic of primitive and derived traits, making it valuable for understanding the early evolution of archosauriforms and the ecological transitions of the Late Triassic.

Modern research continues to focus on the phylogenetic placement of Testaussykli. Recent cladistic studies have supported its close relationship with early oviraptorosaurians, although some researchers argue for a more basal position within Archosauriformes. The limited fossil record, combined with its unique morphological features, makes Testaussykli a subject of ongoing debate and a key taxon for studying the diversification of archosauriform reptiles.
