A paleontologist is a scientist who studies life in the geologic past through fossils and other preserved records. They examine fossilized bones and teeth, tracks, imprints, and chemical signals to reconstruct ancient organisms, their biology, behavior, and environments. Paleontology integrates biology, geology, chemistry, and physics; it seeks to understand how life has changed over hundreds of millions of years and how past ecosystems responded to climate shifts and mass extinctions.

Fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and data modeling are central to the discipline. Researchers locate and excavate fossil sites, prepare specimens, and use imaging techniques such as CT scanning to visualize internal structures. Dating methods—stratigraphy, radiometric dating, and magnetostratigraphy—place fossils in time. Analyses of morphology, function, and phylogeny help reconstruct relationships among organisms. Subfields include vertebrate paleontology, invertebrate paleontology, paleobotany, micropaleontology, ichnology (trace fossils), and paleoecology; paleoanthropology covers human evolution.

Paleontology has a long history with figures such as Mary Anning, Georges Cuvier, and Louis Agassiz shaping its early development. In the 20th century, explorers like Roy Chapman Andrews and researchers such as Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska contributed to fossils in Asia and Africa, while Jack Horner popularized ideas about dinosaur biology. Stephen Jay Gould helped integrate paleontology with evolutionary theory and public science writing.

Today, paleontologists work in universities, museums, government laboratories, and field expeditions. They document biodiversity through time, test hypotheses about evolution and extinction, and inform climate and environmental history. The field emphasizes careful fossil collection and curation, data sharing, and collaboration with geologists, ecologists, and historians of science.
