Teräskalvo

Teräskalvo, often translated as steel membrane or steel skin, refers to a thin layer of steel applied to a material, typically wood, to enhance its properties. This technique is most commonly associated with the construction of wooden ships, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The primary purpose of applying a teräskalvo was to provide increased protection against various forms of damage that could compromise the structural integrity of wooden hulls.

One of the main benefits of a teräskalvo was its resistance to marine borers, such as shipworms. These organisms could tunnel into untreated wood, weakening the hull and leading to leaks. The steel layer acted as a physical barrier, preventing the borers from reaching the wooden structure beneath. Additionally, the steel membrane offered protection against abrasion from ice, debris, and contact with docks or other vessels. This was especially important for ships operating in colder climates or in areas prone to collisions.

The application of teräskalvo involved sheathing the wooden hull with thin steel plates, often overlapping each other to create a continuous barrier. This method represented a transitional phase in shipbuilding, bridging the gap between traditional wooden construction and the fully steel-hulled vessels that would become dominant. While effective in extending the lifespan and durability of wooden ships, the teräskalvo also introduced challenges, including increased weight and the potential for galvanic corrosion where the steel was in contact with dissimilar metals.
