Tervehdyssäännöt, or greeting rules, refer to the established customs and etiquette surrounding how people greet each other in Finland. These rules, while often unspoken, significantly influence social interactions.

The most common form of greeting in Finland is a simple nod or a brief verbal greeting like "hei" or "moi". Handshakes are also prevalent, particularly when meeting someone for the first time, in more formal settings, or when being introduced to a group. The handshake is generally firm but not overly aggressive. Eye contact is usually maintained during the handshake.

In close friendships and among family members, greetings can be more informal and may include hugs or more enthusiastic verbal exchanges. However, unsolicited physical touch is generally not common. When addressing elders or people in positions of authority, a slightly more formal approach might be taken, though the core principles of politeness remain.

It is considered polite to acknowledge people when entering a room or a shared space, even with just a nod or a quiet "hei". Conversely, ignoring someone who clearly sees you can be perceived as rude. When leaving, a similar acknowledgement of departure is also customary.

Finnish greeting culture often emphasizes personal space and a degree of reserve, especially upon first acquaintance. While warmth and friendliness are valued, they are often expressed gradually as relationships develop.
