Termopilarer

Termopilarer, also known as thermoelectric generators (TEGs), are solid-state devices that convert thermal energy (heat) directly into electrical energy through a phenomenon called the Seebeck effect. When a temperature difference exists across a thermoelectric material, charge carriers within the material move from the hotter region to the colder region, creating an electrical voltage. This voltage can then be used to drive an electrical current.

These devices are made from specialized semiconductor materials that exhibit a strong thermoelectric effect. Typically, they consist of p-type and n-type semiconductor elements connected electrically in series and thermally in parallel. When heat is applied to one side and the other side is kept cool, the p-type and n-type elements generate opposing voltages that, when combined in series, produce a usable output voltage.

Termopilarer have no moving parts, making them highly reliable and maintenance-free. They are silent in operation and can be very compact. However, their efficiency in converting heat to electricity is generally low compared to traditional methods like steam turbines. Despite this limitation, their unique advantages make them suitable for niche applications.

Common uses for termopilarer include waste heat recovery from industrial processes, powering remote sensors, and in thermoelectric coolers (which operate on the inverse Peltier effect). They are also explored for applications in automotive systems to capture exhaust heat and in space exploration for powering probes using radioisotope thermoelectric generators. The development of more efficient thermoelectric materials continues to expand their potential applications.
