The name, drawn from the Latin terebra meaning “awl,” reflects their imagined elongated, tapered body form and their burrowing lifestyle. In these narratives, terebrids are proposed as a distinct group separate from real-life lineages, used to explore questions about morphology, ecology, and evolution.

In appearance, terebrids are depicted as soft-bodied, wormlike organisms with a slender main trunk and a progressively narrower posterior. They are often described as having ringed segments and small sensory appendages along the anterior region.
