Teno

Teno is a geographic region in the northwestern part of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands, Spain. It centers on the Teno Massif, a rugged mountain range that forms much of the island’s northern spine and reaches the coastline near Buenavista del Norte. The area encompasses the highlands and the traditional villages that characterize the more isolated, scenic side of the island, with Masca standing out as a particularly famous example.

The landscape features a combination of steep ridges, deep ravines, and dramatic coastal cliffs. One of the most well-known features is the Barranco de Masca, a dramatic gorge carved through volcanic rock that drains toward the sea. The coast in the Teno region presents a contrast of bare escarpments and small coves, while the interior supports a range of microhabitats created by varying altitude and moisture.

Ecologically, Teno hosts remnants of laurisilva, the humid subtropical evergreen forest that historically covered much of the Canary Islands. In addition to this laurel forest, the area supports Canary Island endemic plants and animal species adapted to cliff-bound and upland environments. Parts of the region are designated as protected landscapes or rural park areas to preserve its natural and cultural heritage.

Human activity in Teno centers on tourism, traditional village life, and agriculture. Masca village exemplifies the region’s cultural heritage, with stone houses and terraced paths. The area attracts hikers and nature lovers who use local trails and access routes such as the road networks connecting Masca to the coast, highlighting a balance between conservation and use.
