Tenmangu

Tenmangu is a type of Shinto shrine in Japan dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar and politician who lived in the 9th century. He was deified as Tenjin, the kami of scholarship, learning, and education. As a result, Tenmangu shrines are popular destinations for students praying for success in exams and academic pursuits.

Sugawara no Michizane was exiled to Kyushu after being falsely accused of treason by his political rivals. He died in exile, and shortly after his death, a series of misfortunes befell the capital, which were attributed to his vengeful spirit. To appease him, he was posthumously pardoned and deified as Tenjin. The first Tenmangu shrine was established at Kitano Tenmangu in Kyoto.

Over time, the cult of Tenjin spread throughout Japan, and numerous Tenmangu shrines were built. These shrines are often characterized by plum blossoms, which were Michizane's favorite flower, and statues of oxen, which are believed to be his messengers. Many Tenmangu shrines hold festivals, particularly during examination periods, to honor Tenjin and pray for good fortune. Dazaifu Tenmangu in Fukuoka Prefecture is another historically significant Tenmangu shrine.
