Tenementstyle refers to the architectural and urban design characteristics associated with tenement housing, a form of dense, multi-family residential construction that emerged to accommodate workers during rapid industrial urbanization. It is not a formal architectural movement, but a descriptive label used by historians, preservationists, and critics to categorize a pragmatic, utilitarian approach to housing.

Origins and distribution: Tenementstyle developed in many major cities in Europe and North America from the 19th century onward. In the United States, cities such as New York, Chicago, and Boston built large numbers of tenements to house expanding working-class populations. In Europe, similar forms appeared in industrial centers across the United Kingdom and continental cities. The style is closely tied to the social and economic conditions of its era, including limited land, rising rents, and evolving building codes.

Key features: Typical elements include brick or stone façades, narrow and tall footprints, and a high density of small apartments per building. Interior layouts commonly favored compact room sizes, shared stairwells, and reliance on communal facilities. Fire safety and ventilation were persistent design concerns, leading to later adaptations such as fire escapes, air shafts, and, in some places, the infamous dumbbell or cross-shaped layouts that sought to improve light and air flow to interior units.
