Temperaturutholdenhet refers to an organism's ability to survive and function within a specific range of temperatures. This capability is crucial for life as temperature affects biological processes such as enzyme activity, metabolic rates, and cell membrane integrity. Organisms have evolved various strategies to cope with thermal challenges, broadly categorized as either tolerance or avoidance.

Temperature tolerance involves physiological and biochemical adaptations that allow an organism to withstand extreme temperatures. For instance, many organisms can produce heat-shock proteins that protect cellular components from damage caused by high temperatures. Conversely, some organisms can produce antifreeze proteins to prevent ice crystal formation in extremely cold environments. Cold-blooded animals, or ectotherms, rely on external sources to regulate their body temperature, often seeking out warmer or cooler microhabitats. Warm-blooded animals, or endotherms, maintain a stable internal body temperature through metabolic processes, allowing them to be active across a wider range of ambient temperatures.

Temperature avoidance strategies involve behaviors that minimize exposure to unfavorable temperatures. This can include migration to more suitable climates, seeking shelter in burrows or under foliage, or entering dormant states like hibernation or aestivation during extreme hot or cold periods. The specific temperature range an organism can tolerate is known as its thermal niche, and changes in environmental temperature due to climate change can significantly impact species distribution and survival.
