It refers to a system or process where a human operator controls a machine or device from a distance. This remote control is typically achieved through the use of telecommunication technologies. The operator may be in a different room, a different city, or even a different country from the machine they are controlling.

Teleoperation finds applications in various fields. In medicine, it is the basis of telesurgery, where surgeons can perform operations on patients located far away. This allows specialists to provide care in remote or underserved areas. In industry, teleoperated robots are used for tasks that are dangerous, hazardous, or require high precision, such as working in nuclear power plants, deep-sea exploration, or bomb disposal.

The core components of a teleoperated system usually include an operator console with controls and feedback mechanisms, a communication link, and the remote manipulator or robot. The operator console provides the interface for the human to interact with the remote system. The communication link transmits control commands from the operator to the remote device and sensory feedback (such as video, audio, or haptic data) from the remote device back to the operator. The remote device is the machinery that performs the task under the operator's direction.
