The genus includes two recognized species: Telencephalonissa chlorophthalma and Telencephalonissa sanguinea. Both species are critically endangered due to habitat loss and hunting. Telencephalonissa chlorophthalma, also known as the green-eyed parrot, is the more well-known of the two species. It is characterized by its bright green eyes and a predominantly green plumage with a red patch on its forehead. Telencephalonissa sanguinea, on the other hand, has a more subdued coloration, with a greenish-brown plumage and a red patch on its forehead.

Telencephalonissa species are known for their vocalizations, which include a variety of calls and songs. They are also known to be social birds, often found in pairs or small groups. Their diet primarily consists of fruits, seeds, and insects.
