Tekstuuriyksiköitä, often abbreviated as texels, are the fundamental units of a texture in computer graphics. They are analogous to pixels in a digital image but are specifically used for mapping onto the surfaces of 3D objects. Each texel holds color and other surface information, such as transparency or normal vector data, that is applied to a small portion of a 3D model's surface. When a 3D model is rendered, these texels are sampled and interpolated to create the final visual appearance of the object's surface.

The resolution of a texture is determined by the number of texels it contains, typically expressed as dimensions like 1024x1024 texels. Higher texel density allows for more detailed and sharper appearances on 3D models. Texel filtering techniques, such as nearest-neighbor, bilinear, and trilinear filtering, are used to determine how texels are sampled and blended when viewed at different distances or angles, impacting visual quality and performance. Efficient management and sampling of texels are crucial for achieving realistic and performant graphics in video games, simulations, and other visual applications.
