Tekstuuriyksiköiden, often translated as texture units or texture mapping units, are specialized processors found in graphics processing units (GPUs). Their primary function is to apply textures to three-dimensional models, giving surfaces visual detail and realism. Without texture units, polygons would appear as flat, monochromatic surfaces.

These units work by fetching texel data from texture memory and then applying various operations, such as filtering and blending, to that data. This processed texel data is then combined with the color information of the rendered polygon to produce the final pixel color. The sophistication of texture units has evolved significantly over time, with modern GPUs featuring numerous texture units capable of complex calculations and multi-texturing operations.

The number and capabilities of texture units are key factors in a GPU's overall performance, particularly in graphics-intensive applications like video games and professional visualization software. More texture units generally allow for faster rendering of complex scenes with detailed textures and effects.
