Tekstiilindus, often translated as textiles or the textile industry, encompasses the processes and businesses involved in the production of fabrics and yarns. This broad field starts with the sourcing of raw materials, which can be natural fibers like cotton, wool, linen, and silk, or synthetic fibers such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic. These raw materials undergo various mechanical and chemical treatments.

Spinning is a key process where fibers are twisted together to form yarns. These yarns are then used in weaving or knitting to create fabrics. Weaving involves interlacing yarns at right angles, while knitting uses interlocking loops of yarn. Other methods of fabric creation include non-woven techniques, where fibers are bonded together without spinning or weaving.

Following fabric formation, finishing processes are applied to enhance the fabric's properties and appearance. These can include dyeing for color, printing for patterns, and treatments for water resistance, flame retardancy, or wrinkle resistance. The textile industry is global, with manufacturing often concentrated in regions with access to raw materials or lower production costs. It is a significant sector contributing to economies through employment and trade, and it supplies materials for a wide range of products, from clothing and home furnishings to industrial applications. The industry is also increasingly focused on sustainability, exploring eco-friendly materials and production methods.
