Teknologiafhængighed, also known as technological addiction or tech dependency, refers to an excessive, compulsive reliance on electronic devices and digital platforms that interferes with daily functioning, relationships, and overall well‑being. The term combines the Danish words “teknologi” (technology) and “afhængighed” (addiction).

The phenomenon typically manifests in patterns such as constant checking of social media, compulsive gaming, or scrolling through news feeds for extended periods. Individuals may experience withdrawal symptoms—irritation, anxiety, or restlessness—when deprived of digital access. While technology can enhance productivity and connectivity, these symptoms resemble those seen in substance and behavioral addictions.

Risk factors include easy accessibility of devices, social pressures to remain online, and reward mechanisms within apps that trigger dopamine release. Younger users, who grew up in a digital environment, are particularly vulnerable. Cognitive overload from multitasking and sleep disruption from blue‑light exposure further aggravate dependency.

Negative consequences span physical health (e.g., eye strain, poor posture), mental health (e.g., increased anxiety, depressive symptoms), and social impairment (reduced face‑to‑face interaction). In extreme cases, technology can exacerbate academic or occupational performance issues.

Mitigation strategies involve setting device‑free zones or times, practicing mindful usage, and employing app‑based usage monitors. Social support, therapy, and digital literacy education can also help users develop healthier boundaries.
