Tavoiteväriavaruus, or target color space, refers to a standardized color space that an image or graphic is intended to be displayed or reproduced within. This concept is crucial in digital imaging and printing to ensure consistent color representation across different devices and media. When a digital image is created, it is typically done within a specific color space, such as sRGB or Adobe RGB. However, for final output, such as printing on a particular type of paper with specific inks, or displaying on a monitor with a known color gamut, a target color space is defined.

The process of converting an image from its source color space to a target color space is known as color management. This conversion is essential because different color spaces have different ranges of reproducible colors, known as gamuts. If the source color space contains colors that are outside the gamut of the target color space, these colors must be mapped or adjusted to fit within the target's capabilities. This mapping process, often using rendering intents, aims to preserve the visual appearance of the image as closely as possible within the limitations of the target color space.
