Taustavalolähteillä is a Finnish term that translates to "backlight sources" in English. This concept is widely applicable in various fields, particularly in display technology and lighting design. In the context of displays, such as those found in televisions, computer monitors, and smartphones, backlight sources are essential for illuminating the pixels and making the image visible. Historically, the most common backlight technology was the cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL). However, advancements in technology have led to the widespread adoption of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as the primary backlight source due to their energy efficiency, longer lifespan, and ability to produce a wider range of colors and brightness levels.

LED backlights can be implemented in different configurations. Edge-lit systems place LEDs along the edges of the display panel, with light guides distributing the illumination across the screen. Direct-lit systems, on the other hand, position LEDs directly behind the panel, allowing for more precise control over local dimming and contrast ratios, which can significantly enhance image quality.
