Tarifgruppen

Tarifgruppen are wage classification groups defined in collective bargaining agreements in German-speaking labor markets. They categorize the work performed by employees according to tasks, responsibilities, and required qualifications, and determine the corresponding pay grade within a wage system.

The exact design and numbering of tariff groups vary by sector and agreement; some systems use terms like Tarifgruppe or Entgeltgruppe, with numbers or other designations. Each group typically corresponds to a published job profile describing usual duties, required education or training, and sometimes needed experience. Within many agreements, there are also levels or stages within a group that reflect progression over time or through performance.

Assignment to a tariffgruppe is usually the result of a formal process involving employer and employee representatives. This process may rely on a job description analysis, a points system, or a classification committee. If parties disagree on the classification, there are often defined procedures for review or arbitration to resolve disputes.

The tariffgruppe determines the base pay and the applicable wage range for the position. In many systems, progression to higher steps or to higher tariffgroups occurs through time in service, additional responsibilities, or demonstrated qualifications.
