Tapasztalnak

Tapasztalnak is a Hungarian word that roughly translates to "tasters" in English. It denotes a subset of the old Hungarian nobility who held the title of nemesek or "nobility" but lacked the rights and privileges of a fully-fledged nobleman.

Historically, tapasztalnak were considered to be of lower rank compared to the higher nobility, but were still above the common freemen and peasants. They held a unique position in society, often serving as military officers, administrators, or advisory council members. Their privileges and responsibilities were specified in the medieval Hungarian code, known as the Golden Bull of 1222.

Tapasztalnak were usually men who were not born into the nobility but were granted the title through service or marriage into a noble family. They often held lands and property, but with restrictions. They were also subject to certain obligations, such as providing military service, paying taxes, and participating in the county's defends.

In spite of their relatively low status, tapasztalnak enjoyed some special rights, including the right to participate in the general council of the county, the county's military assemblies, and the diet. Tapasztalnak also had the right to own land, which was a rare occurrence for the lower classes of society.

The tapasztalnak system was in place in Hungary from the 13th to the 15th century. During this period, the title was gradually abolished, and their position became a relic of the past. Nonetheless, the tapasztalnak remain a fascinating aspect of Hungarian history, serving as a reminder of the social hierarchy and the complexities of the medieval nobility system. Tapasztalnak are still studied by historians to gain insight into the formation and structure of ancient Hungarian society.
