Tangentsite

Tangentsite is a term used in some expository writings to describe a hypothetical site in the sense of a Grothendieck topology that encodes information about tangent structures on differentiable manifolds. It is not a standard object in mainstream mathematics, and there is no consensus definition in widely used texts. As a teaching device, tangentsite aims to connect the language of tangent vectors with sheaf theory and descent.

In this imagined framework, to each open set U in a manifold M one associates a category T(U) of tangent data, such as tangent vectors, local trivializations of the tangent bundle, or linearized differential operators on U. Morphisms preserve the tangential structure. A covering {Ui → U} is chosen so that tangent data on U can be glued from the data on the Ui, mirroring the sheaf condition for functions but for tangent information.

The motivation is to formalize how tangent information behaves under restriction and gluing, and to provide a site-theoretic language for connections and differential operators. The construction echoes the way jet spaces and tangent functors capture first-order behavior, but is framed as a site rather than a concrete bundle.
