Tandkødssygdom

Tandkødssygdom, or periodontal disease, is an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. It begins with gingivitis, characterized by inflammation of the gums, which may appear red, swollen, and bleed easily. This initial stage is often painless and can be reversed with good oral hygiene.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis. In this more severe form, the gums pull away from the teeth, forming pockets that become infected. The body's immune response to fight the infection, along with the toxins produced by bacteria, starts to break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. This can lead to loosening of teeth, and eventually, tooth loss.

Risk factors for developing tandkødssygdom include poor oral hygiene, smoking, diabetes, hormonal changes, certain medications, and genetic predisposition. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing, is crucial for prevention. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are also vital for early detection and treatment. Treatment for periodontitis typically involves professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line, and in more advanced cases, surgical procedures may be necessary to repair damaged tissues.
