Tamoure

Tamoure, also known as tamea or tamure, is a traditional Polynesian dance and music form originating from the island of Tahiti in French Polynesia. It is characterized by its energetic and rhythmic movements, often performed by both men and women. The dance typically involves rapid hip shaking, particularly by the women, and vigorous leg movements and stomping by the men.

The music accompanying the tamoure is usually played on traditional instruments such as the pahu (a large drum) and the toere (a slit log drum), along with ukuleles and guitars. The rhythms are distinct and driving, encouraging lively participation. While historically performed during ceremonies and celebrations, tamoure has evolved into a popular performance art and a significant element of Tahitian cultural identity.

Contemporary tamoure often features more elaborate costumes, including grass skirts, flower leis, and headdresses. It is performed in various settings, from formal stage shows to informal gatherings.
