Talvekatet

Talvekatet is an Estonian term that broadly refers to winter covering or winter protection for plants. It encompasses various methods and materials used to shield vegetation from harsh winter conditions such as freezing temperatures, frost, wind, and heavy snowfall. The primary goal of talvekatet is to prevent damage to plants, ensuring their survival and healthy growth in the following spring.

Different types of talvekatet are employed depending on the plant species, its hardiness, and the severity of the local climate. Common methods include mulching with organic materials like straw, leaves, or wood chips, which insulate the soil and protect the root system. For more sensitive plants, covering with non-woven fabrics, burlap, or spruce branches is often used to create a protective barrier against wind and frost. In some cases, larger plants or shrubs might be encased in protective structures or wrapped with horticultural fleece.

The timing of applying talvekatet is crucial. It is typically done after the ground has begun to freeze but before the harshest winter weather sets in. Removing the covering in the spring should also be done gradually to allow plants to acclimate to changing conditions and avoid sudden frost damage.
