Taivutusjännityksenä, often translated as bending stress, refers to the stress experienced by a material when it is subjected to a bending moment. This stress is not uniform throughout the cross-section of the member; it varies linearly from a maximum tensile stress on one surface to a maximum compressive stress on the opposite surface, with zero stress occurring at the neutral axis. The neutral axis is an imaginary line within the cross-section where the material experiences no strain or stress due to bending.

The magnitude of bending stress depends on the applied bending moment, the distance from the neutral axis, and the material's geometric properties, specifically the moment of inertia of the cross-section. For a given bending moment, stresses are higher further away from the neutral axis. The formula for bending stress ($\sigma$) is often expressed as $\sigma = \frac{My}{I}$, where M is the bending moment, y is the distance from the neutral axis to the point of interest, and I is the moment of inertia of the cross-section about the neutral axis.

Understanding bending stress is crucial in engineering design, particularly in structural engineering and mechanical design, to ensure that components can withstand the loads they are intended to carry without failure. Exceeding the material's yield strength due to bending stress can lead to permanent deformation, while exceeding the ultimate tensile or compressive strength will result in fracture. Therefore, calculations involving bending stress are fundamental for determining safe dimensions and material selections for beams, shafts, and other structural elements.
