Taivutusjännitykselle, often translated as bending stress or flexural stress, refers to the internal stress within a material that is subjected to bending. When a structural element, such as a beam, is bent, one side of the element experiences compression while the other side experiences tension. This internal resistance to deformation is what constitutes bending stress.

The magnitude of bending stress is not uniform across the cross-section of the bent object. It is typically zero at the neutral axis, which is an imaginary line passing through the centroid of the cross-section where the material experiences neither tension nor compression. The stress increases linearly with the distance from the neutral axis, reaching its maximum value at the outermost fibers of the cross-section. These maximum stresses are critical in determining the load-bearing capacity of the material and preventing failure.

Bending stress is a crucial concept in mechanical engineering and structural design. It is calculated using formulas derived from the principles of mechanics of materials. The most common formula involves the bending moment applied to the object, the distance from the neutral axis to the point where the stress is being calculated, and the moment of inertia of the cross-section. Understanding and accurately calculating bending stress is essential for ensuring the safety and efficiency of structures and mechanical components, preventing them from deforming excessively or fracturing under load.
