In common formats, horizontal alignment is typically controlled by a property such as text-align, applied to table, th, or td elements, with values like left, center, right, or justify. Vertical alignment is handled by a property like vertical-align, with values such as top, middle, bottom, or baseline. Some older specifications use deprecated attributes for alignment, which modern implementations replace with CSS. Consistency across a table helps readers scan data more efficiently.

In typesetting and data formats, specific conventions emerge. In LaTeX, horizontal alignment of columns is set by column specifiers l, c, or r for left, center, or right alignment, respectively, and vertical alignment is influenced by the cell construction and packages used. In Markdown and lightweight formats, alignment hints may be supported in limited ways, often through syntax in the header row or surrounding styles, but support varies by implementation.

Best practices favor aligning numeric data to the right to ease comparison, textual data to the left, and maintaining consistent alignment across related columns.
