TNIV

TNIV stands for Today's New International Version, a translation of the Bible into English produced by the International Bible Society (IBS), now Biblica. First published in 2002 as a revision of the New International Version (NIV) 1984, the TNIV aimed to improve readability and reflect contemporary English usage while maintaining fidelity to the underlying Hebrew and Greek texts. The translation employed inclusive language when the original languages indicated a generic or plural sense that included both men and women, though it did not seek to alter doctrinal statements or referents to God.

The project was undertaken by a team of translators and scholars from various Christian denominations. It included updates to certain terms and phrases to reflect modern understanding and usage, with work on both Old and New Testaments.

Reception was mixed. Critics from some evangelical and conservative groups argued that the TNIV's gender-inclusive choices deviated from traditional understandings and the NIV base text. Some publishers and churches withdrew or limited their use of the TNIV; others supported it as clearer for contemporary readers. Proponents argued that the changes improved clarity without changing essential doctrine.

In the 2010s Biblica indicated a strategy prioritizing a new NIV revision rather than continuing TNIV as a separate edition, and a later NIV revision (NIV 2011) largely supplanted the TNIV in many markets. Today the TNIV is often discussed as part of the broader debate over gender-inclusive Bible translations and remains of historical significance in translation studies.
