TKPP

TKPP, also known as tripotassium phosphate, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula K3PO4. It is the potassium salt of phosphoric acid. In its pure form, TKPP is a white, crystalline solid. It is highly soluble in water, forming an alkaline solution due to hydrolysis.

TKPP finds several applications across various industries. In the food industry, it is used as a food additive, specifically as an acidity regulator, emulsifier, and sequestrant. It is often designated by the E number E340(iii). In this capacity, it helps to maintain the pH of food products and can improve their texture and stability. It is commonly found in processed cheeses, dairy products, and baked goods.

Beyond food applications, TKPP is also utilized in industrial processes. It can serve as a buffer in chemical reactions and is employed in some cleaning formulations due to its ability to sequester metal ions and its alkalinity. In agriculture, it can be used as a component of fertilizers, providing potassium and phosphorus, essential nutrients for plant growth. Its hygroscopic nature means it readily absorbs moisture from the air. When heated strongly, it decomposes to form potassium metaphosphate and potassium pyrophosphate.
