Tõuaretus, often translated as selective breeding or animal breeding, is the process of humans controlling the reproduction of animals to develop specific traits or qualities. This practice has been fundamental in the domestication of many species, including livestock, pets, and working animals. The goal is to enhance desirable characteristics such as increased milk production in dairy cows, faster running speed in horses, or specific temperament in dogs.

The process typically involves identifying animals with the desired traits and allowing them to reproduce, while preventing those with less desirable traits from breeding.
