Sõnavõttetõlkimine, also known as booth interpreting or simultaneous interpreting, is a method of oral translation where the interpreter translates the speaker's message into the target language almost concurrently with the speaker's delivery. This is typically performed in a soundproof booth using specialized equipment, with the interpreter speaking into a microphone connected to headphones worn by the listeners.

The process demands high levels of concentration, quick reflexes, and an excellent command of both the source and target languages, as well as cultural nuances. Interpreters must be able to process spoken language, analyze its meaning, and reformulate it in another language with minimal delay. This often involves a slight lag, usually a few seconds, to allow the interpreter to grasp a full phrase or sentence before beginning the translation.

Sõnavõttetõlkimine is commonly used in international conferences, high-level meetings, and live broadcasts where time is a critical factor and the audience requires immediate understanding. It requires a team of at least two interpreters per language pair to share the demanding workload, as sustained concentration for extended periods is not feasible. The specialized equipment and environment contribute to its effectiveness in facilitating seamless communication across language barriers in demanding settings.
