Säätyjärjestelmä, often translated as the estate system or social hierarchy, refers to a historical social structure divided into distinct classes or estates. These estates were typically based on birth, profession, and legal status, with varying rights and obligations assigned to each. In many European societies, the most common estates included the clergy, the nobility, and the commoners. The clergy often held significant spiritual and temporal power, while the nobility possessed inherited titles, land, and military privileges. The commoners, comprising the vast majority of the population, encompassed peasants, artisans, merchants, and laborers, who generally bore the brunt of taxation and lacked the privileges of the upper estates.

The säätyjärjestelmä was characterized by a hierarchical order where social mobility was often limited. Marriage within one's estate was common, and the legal framework reinforced the privileges and restrictions associated with each group. While the clergy and nobility enjoyed exemptions from certain taxes and duties, commoners were often subject to feudal obligations and lacked political representation. The system was deeply ingrained in the social and economic fabric of many pre-modern societies, influencing everything from law and governance to daily life and personal identity. Over time, pressures from economic changes, Enlightenment ideas, and revolutionary movements led to the gradual dismantling of these rigid estate systems in many parts of the world.
