Three fundamental methods are employed: time, distance, and shielding. Reducing the duration of exposure to a radiation source is a straightforward way to lower the absorbed dose. Increasing the distance from a radiation source significantly reduces exposure because radiation intensity decreases with the square of the distance. Shielding involves placing materials between the radiation source and individuals to absorb or block the radiation. Common shielding materials include lead, concrete, and water, with the effectiveness of the shield depending on the type and energy of the radiation.

In addition to these physical measures, administrative controls and personal protective equipment play important roles. These include establishing safety protocols, training personnel, monitoring radiation levels, and providing protective clothing like lead aprons or dosimeters to measure individual exposure.
