Sähkönsiirtonopeudet, often translated as electricity transmission speeds or power transmission speeds, refers to how quickly electrical energy can be moved from a point of generation to a point of consumption. This concept is distinct from the speed of individual electrons moving within a conductor, which is relatively slow. Instead, it relates to the speed at which the electromagnetic field, which carries the energy, propagates.

When a voltage is applied to a conductor, an electric field is established. This field propagates through the conductor and the surrounding space at a speed close to the speed of light in that medium. This rapid propagation is what allows for near-instantaneous delivery of electrical power once a circuit is closed. For example, flipping a light switch results in the light illuminating almost immediately because the electromagnetic wave carrying the energy travels very quickly.

The speed of this energy propagation is influenced by the properties of the transmission medium, particularly its dielectric constant and magnetic permeability. In a vacuum, electromagnetic waves travel at the speed of light, approximately 299,792 kilometers per second. Within a conductor, the speed is slightly reduced due to these properties. However, for practical purposes in electrical grids, the energy transfer is considered to be effectively instantaneous, with the speed of transmission being a fundamental aspect of how electricity networks function.
