Szövetbomlást, often translated as tissue decay or decomposition, refers to the process by which organic tissues break down after death. This natural phenomenon is a crucial part of the ecosystem, as it returns nutrients to the environment. The rate and manner of szövetbomlást are influenced by several factors, including temperature, humidity, oxygen availability, and the presence of scavengers or microorganisms.

The decomposition process typically begins shortly after death and involves several stages. Initially, the cells begin to break down, leading to a loss of cellular integrity. This is often followed by autolysis, where the body's own enzymes begin to digest the tissues. Next, putrefaction sets in, driven by bacteria that proliferate within the body. These bacteria break down proteins and other organic compounds, producing gases and characteristic odors.

External factors play a significant role. Warmer temperatures accelerate bacterial activity and thus decomposition, while cold temperatures can slow it down considerably. Moisture also aids bacterial growth. Exposure to air can promote oxidation and the activity of insects, which can contribute to the breakdown of soft tissues. Conversely, burial in soil can limit oxygen and insect access, potentially slowing the process, though soil microorganisms will still be active.

By observing the stage of decomposition and the types of insects present, forensic investigators can provide valuable information in criminal investigations.
