Szomorúságot, meaning sadness in Hungarian, is a fundamental human emotion characterized by feelings of disadvantage, loss, sorrow, grief, or despair. It is a natural response to adverse events, disappointments, or perceived losses, whether they are tangible, such as the death of a loved one, or intangible, like the failure to achieve a goal. While often unpleasant, sadness serves important functions. It can signal to others that we need support, encourage introspection and problem-solving, and promote social bonding through shared experiences.

Mild sadness might be a fleeting feeling of disappointment, while profound sadness, often termed grief, can be a long-lasting and debilitating experience.
