Szennyvízberuh, a term commonly used in Hungary, refers to a sewage treatment plant (szennyvízkezelő telep) that processes wastewater from residential, commercial, and industrial sources before discharging it into natural water bodies or using the treated water for non-potable purposes. The word is a contraction of szennyvízkezelés (wastewater treatment) and is often shortened in everyday discourse. Infrastructure typically includes primary sedimentation, secondary biological treatment, sometimes tertiary processes such as filtration or disinfection, and sludge handling units.

Modern szennyvízberuh systems are designed to meet stringent environmental regulations, such as the EU Water Framework Directive, and to achieve high removal efficiencies for organic pollutants, suspended solids, nitrogen, phosphorus, and pathogens. Technologies employed range from activated sludge processes, membrane bioreactors, and anaerobic digesters to advanced oxidation and nutrient recovery systems. The plants also incorporate monitoring and automation to maintain operational stability, comply with discharge permits, and minimize energy consumption.
