Their primary purpose is to deliver active pharmaceutical ingredients directly to the eye's surface or internal structures, allowing for localized therapeutic effects with minimal systemic absorption.

The most common forms of szemkészítményeket include eye drops, also known as ophthalmic solutions or suspensions. These are liquid preparations that are instilled directly into the conjunctival sac. Ointments and gels are also utilized, offering a longer contact time with the ocular surface, which can be beneficial for sustained drug release or for treating conditions requiring prolonged moisture. Eye washes, or ophthalmic irrigations, are used to cleanse the eye or to remove foreign bodies and irritants.
