Syömisriippuvuus, also known as food addiction, is a complex behavioral issue characterized by an compulsive craving for and consumption of certain foods, often those high in sugar, fat, or salt, despite negative consequences. Individuals experiencing syömisriippuvuus may exhibit a loss of control over their eating habits, continued overeating even when full, and significant distress related to their food consumption. This condition is not formally recognized as a diagnosis in major psychiatric manuals like the DSM-5, but it is a subject of ongoing research and clinical discussion.

The underlying mechanisms of syömisriippuvuus are thought to involve brain reward pathways, similar to those implicated in substance addiction. The consumption of palatable foods can trigger the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine, leading to feelings of pleasure and reinforcement. Over time, this can create a cycle of craving and consumption that is difficult to break. Genetic predisposition, psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma, as well as environmental influences like the availability of highly palatable foods, can all contribute to the development of syömisriippuvuus.

Symptoms can include preoccupation with food, withdrawal symptoms when attempting to restrict certain foods (such as irritability or anxiety), and continued eating despite feeling unwell or gaining weight. Treatment often involves a multidisciplinary approach, including nutritional counseling, psychological therapy (such as cognitive behavioral therapy or dialectical behavior therapy), and support groups.
