These mechanisms are a complex interplay of forces generated by both the mother and the fetus.

Key components of birth mechanics include uterine contractions, which are involuntary muscular contractions of the uterus that help to dilate the cervix and expel the fetus. The amniotic sac, filled with amniotic fluid, also plays a role by cushioning the fetus and contributing to cervical dilation. The fetus itself actively participates through a series of positional changes and rotations as it navigates the birth canal. These movements are often described as the "mechanisms of labor" and are crucial for adapting the fetal head and body to the maternal pelvis.

The maternal pelvis provides the bony structure through which the fetus must pass. Its shape and size are critical factors influencing the ease or difficulty of delivery. The forces of uterine contractions, combined with the mother's voluntary pushing efforts, are directed to propel the fetus downwards.
