Syntetisaattori, the Finnish term for synthesizer, refers to an electronic musical instrument that generates audio signals by manipulating electrical or digital signals. Synthesizers use various synthesis techniques—including subtractive, additive, frequency modulation, and wavetable—to create a wide range of timbres. Early analog models produced sound by shaping voltage-controlled oscillators, filters, and amplifiers, while modern digital synthesizers employ sample-based or virtual analog modeling.

The concept originated in the 20th century with pioneering work by engineers such as John Simonton and Walt Steiner, who introduced the first monophonic analog synthesizers in the 1960s. The Moog Minimoog and ARP 2600 became iconic in the 1970s, reaching mainstream audiences and influencing rock, jazz, and pop music. During the 1980s, digital synthesizers such as the Yamaha DX7 broadened the palette with FM synthesis, enabling complex metallic and bell-like tones. In the 1990s and 2000s, software synthesizers and hardware amalgams proliferated, offering expanded polyphony and integrated samplers.

Synthesizers are integral to genres ranging from electronic dance music to ambient film scores. Musicians use them for lead lines, pads, basses, and percussive textures. The instruments can be controlled via keyboards, MIDI controllers, or sequencers, and modern devices often include performance features like arpeggiators and sidechaining. Education in sound synthesis is taught in universities and music schools, and synthesizer technology continues to evolve with advancements in algorithmic composition, neural synthesis, and immersive audio rendering.
